If you’d have asked me 2+ years ago if I wanted to work in recruitment, my honest answer would have been, “not a chance”.
However, in January 2017 when I’d just about decided I was fed up of my old job, an opportune message popped up on LinkedIn from Laura, the internal recruiter here at EMEA, sparking my interest with details of a job which would leverage my French language skills and with frequent travel to Switzerland.
“Why not?” I thought; and put myself forward for the interview process. After a lot of deliberation, I accepted the role. Coming up to 2½ years later, I can safely say that I am so glad that I did.
I don’t have any prior recruitment experience, but from chatting to my colleagues who do, EMEA is very different to your typical agency. To this day, it is still the international element which captivates me the most, with the opportunity to travel to Switzerland once a month. Of course, the trips are not holidays, but I have visited new cities which I might not have done otherwise, as well as building my own confidence in networking, presenting and meeting new people.
Money wasn’t, and still isn’t, the primary motivator for me to get out of bed in the morning, but after being promoted from a Researcher to Consultant, and Consultant to Senior Consultant, in less than 2 years and having a taste of the commission that can be earnt, bonus is now firmly up there with the many other reasons I enjoy working for EMEA.
Aside from personal compensation, the business does a lot to ensure that its employees feel appreciated when they hit targets (both individually and as a team), through quarterly Michelin star lunches, nights out, reward trips to Vegas, day trips, Christmas parties in Europe and other little perks like wine fridges in the office and personal training sessions on a Wednesday (all about the balance, right?).
Material rewards aside, the company invests in staff development through regular training sessions and mentor schemes. Because EMEA is relatively small, we are lucky enough to have one-on-one training sessions with the owner of the business and other Senior Managers, a claim which I don’t think many businesses can make. As most of the management still recruit themselves, they understand the daily pressure consultants are under and offer relevant advice, which really makes a difference to recruitment newbies - like I was.
In summary, whilst like any recruitment role this job can be tough at times, it is all made worthwhile by EMEA, who are a great company to work for.
